What Are Low Impact Exercises?

Exercises can be split into 2 categories based on their intensity and type: ‘high impact’ and ‘low impact’ (and sometimes even ‘no impact’ is an included category).

High impact: High intensity, harder on the body. These are exercises that move both feet off the ground like cross training jumping, running, jumping jacks, burpees, high knees, etc.

Low impact: Lower intensity, easier on the body and joints. They are typically defined by exercises that aren’t quite as intense and vigorous as others, and one foot stays on the ground at all times. They are still a great way to get your heart rate up, burn calories, fit in a great workout, all without worrying about injuries or pain. Low impact doesn’t mean “easy”, it just means it’s easier on your joints.

Who Should Do Low Impact Workouts?

Really, everyone should give their body a break from time to time from high intensity exercise. Too much excessive strain on our bodies from repeated exercise can wear us down and even cause injuries, stiffness, and pain later on.

Low impact workouts can be great alternatives for those recovering from injury or surgery, those with joint pain and need a break, and individuals that want to focus on strength, flexibility, balance, and alignment. Overall, everyone will benefit from some low-impact workouts. Even the toughest athletes do some lower-impact workouts to give their muscles a good balance.

Is Low Impact Cardio Effective?

Combining some high and low impact cardio is the most effective fitness plan (depending on your abilities and health). Many people enjoy cross training exercise plans to fit in a variety of exercises for overall benefits to their body and improve fitness.

Is Low Impact Cardio Good for Weight Loss?

Any type of exercise can help you burn calories and fat and lose weight, as long as you are consistent and have a good fitness plan. Low impact cardio can be an effective way to get in a great workout and not worry about injury or pain.

Overall, the best type of exercise for weight loss is the kind that you enjoy and will commit to doing regularly.

What are the Best Low Impact Cardio Exercises?

Some low-impact workouts are a lot more effective than you might think. Walking, using a treadmill or elliptical or stairmaster, types of strength training, biking, rowing, Tai chi, yoga, Pilates, swimming, water aerobics, step aerobics, etc. the list goes on and on! There are many great types of activities that are totally effective exercises and count as low-impact cardio.
