Whether it’s the weight,
the distance,
the sets, the reps,
the intensity,
or magnitude…
If it doesn’t scare you, it’s probably not enough.
This week’s fitness motivation quote is brought to you by the comfort zone… and completely obliterating it! All too often in fitness (I would even argue in life, for that matter) we find ourselves getting comfortable.
“I run X distance on the treadmill at X speed and that is that.”
“I lift X amount of weight X number of times and call it good.”
The comfort zone is a dangerous place to find ourselves. It’s a place where monotony starts to set in and progress goes to die. When you find yourself in the comfort zone, exercising is no longer new and exciting; it can become a tedious chore that has to be checked off your list just because it’s on your list.
So how do we make things exciting again? How do you break out of your comfort zone and start seeing progression and results again? Easy – add a little fear….
Here’s two treadmill workouts – examine your reaction to each one…
1. 30 minutes at a comfortable pace
2. 30 minute intervals – 2 minutes comfortable to warm up and then progressive incline or speed every two minutes for the remaining 28 minutes.
Workout #1 is probably accompanied by the thought of “Alright, sure. I can do that.” Workout #2 probably entails some sort of “Oh man, that’s gonna be brutal” and “I’m going to die by the end of that!”. Workout #2 is accompanied with that feeling deep down inside that, while it’s going to kick your butt, you’re a little excited to try it out. You’re excited to push yourself harder and be better. You’re excited to go faster, harder, and stronger. At the end of the workout you’re going to be gassed, but probably have a bigger smile on your face than would have been there had you picked Workout #1. This is the “fear” factor I’m talking about. This is where the comfort zone goes to die and where ostentatious results are born.
“If it doesn’t scare you a little bit, it’s probably not enough.”
So dig deep. Push harder. And go get scared.
