With the colder weather approaching you may be re-thinking your cardio. What was once your sunny, well-lit jog path is becoming a cold, dark, rainy (soon-to-be-snowy) obstacle course. Don’t let the change in weather keep you from getting your heart rate up! Today I’m sharing 5 of my favorite indoor cardio exercises that actually work better than running! Take that cold and rainy days; you can’t keep us from our goals! Keep reading for more!

Now let’s do this…
Personally I like to do this workout in some type of HIIT format. Perform each of the exercises below for a 40-second work period followed by a 20-second rest period. Perform them one after the other until all 5 exercises have been performed, rest for 60 seconds, and then repeat two more times (3 sets total). You’ll get in a killer workout for your whole body in just under 20 minutes. Here we go:
The Workout
Burpees (40 seconds on, 20 seconds off)
One of my all-time favorites for at-home, calorie-shredding goodness! Combining motions of a squat, plank, push up, mountain climber, and jumping jack into a total-body barrage that’s a must in any arsenal!
Alternating Jump Lunges (40 seconds on, 20 seconds off)
Perform a lunge onto your left leg, left foot way out in front of you with you left knee in line with your toes but never crossing in front of your toes. From the lunge position leap into the air and change positions, landing in a lunge position on your right leg now.
Thrusters (40 seconds on, 20 seconds off)
What could make squats any better? How about front squats with a military press?! Hold dumbbells or some other form of resistance at shoulder level. Perform a squat with your chest up, shoulders back and head held high. Upon return from your squat, press the weights up above your head.
Speed Skater Lunges (40 seconds on, 20 seconds off)
Great for the lateral hips and quads. Start with your feet together and leap laterally onto your left foot. Drop your right foot back behind you and lateral (outside) of your left foot in a curtsy lunge position. Then return from the lunge and leap onto your right foot. This time drop your left foot behind you and to your right side in a curtsy lunge position.
Star Jumps (40 seconds on, 20 seconds off)
Basically we’re taking jumping jacks and doubling the intensity! Start with your feet together and your hands at your sides. Leap into the air and bring your arms up into the air at a 45 degree angle while spreading your legs as far as they go (about a 45 degree angle). Here’s the clincher – before landing bring your feet back together and your hands back to to your sides. Land softly in the same position that you started.
Rest 60 seconds
Because hey – I’m not a complete sadist! I love results, but need my water every now and then!
And there you have it! A killer, at-home cardio workout that’s perfect for the days when you can’t go outside!!
