WHAT IS THE HEALTHIEST EATING PLAN?
With so much information about nutrition available, it can be confusing as to what actually works and will help you to be the healthiest you can be.
Everyone these days seems to be a “nutrition expert” begging you to try the latest fad diet. Fad diets are often focused on the goal of weight loss. They may help you lose a lot of weight initially, but it can be tough to keep off that weight long-term.
The best eating plan helps you make sustainable changes for a healthy lifestyle for maintaining a healthy weight long-term.
The best healthy eating plans emphasize fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. They should also include low-fat dairy products and lean proteins, while helping you control portion sizes.
It is important to limit saturated fats, trans fats, sodium, and added sugars in your eating plan for overall health.
TIPS FOR HEALTHY EATING ON A BUDGET
Healthy foods may seem more expensive than unhealthier, processed options, but if you follow some tips for planning your meals, cooking more at home, and making smart decisions at the grocery store- you can easily have a healthy diet on a tight budget.
You always need to include some sort of meal planning to save money at the grocery store. Did you know the average shopper spends $2.17 for every minute they are in the grocery store?
Impulse purchases really add up. Meal plan for the week and make a grocery list. Plan meals based on what you already have on hand and then only buy what you will be sure to use.
Many whole foods are actually cheaper than processed options. Junk food can often add up quickly and take up a lot of your food budget. And don’t forget to stock up on sales- especially for produce. You can freeze many fruits and vegetables to use later in smoothies, soups, pizzas, stir frys etc.
Use most of your food budget to stock up on produce and cheaper cuts of lean meats. With the rest of your budget you can start incorporating more inexpensive items for meals such as eggs, beans, frozen and canned fruits and vegetables, potatoes and sweet potatoes, brown rice, and whole-wheat pasta.
Try not to eat out very often- that can really add to your weekly food cost. You can make large batches of meals for a week to have quick meals that save you time and money.
Remember that you really can’t put a price on good health. Try your best to eat healthy food and your body will benefit.
