Why do you do it?
“Crazy”, “Dumb”, and “Waste of time” are among my favorites. When I tell people about my workout routines I never really know what response I’m going to get. Most of them are very supportive and usually include the individual asking for some kind of advice. I’m always taken back, however, at the people who respond negatively. “Why would you ever do that??” when I tell them I wake up around 6:00 to go workout. “Wow – that’s really gotta suck” when I tell them about my diet including watching calories and fat content. And my personal favorite: “That’s gotta be really hard to live like that.” Have any of you encountered anything similar? Well this type of conversation got me thinking – “why do I DO it?” The alternative is so much easier! Sleep late, watch a lot of TV, eat whatever I want…. why do I maintain this way of life?! The answer, my friends, is really quite simple. My lifestyle is so much more than a way of life…
It’s a way to LIVE.
I’ve seen the other side. I’ve seen what years of disuse and atrophy and poor eating can do and I simply don’t want that… EVER. As a physical therapist I’ve seen the effects of this lifestyle on my patients and the effect that it has not only on them, but those they love as well. “I just want to be able to play with my children”, “To make it once around the block without pain”, “To be able to pick up my grandkids” are common goals amongst my patient population. With the correct stretching and strengthening exercises the majority of these patients are able to fulfill these goals. There’s no greater joy as a PT than hearing someone say “when I started with you I was unable to _________ . Yesterday, I did it!!”
Fitness is so much more than a destination, a goal, a lifestyle, or a fad. It’s more than a way of life – it’s the way that I LIVE. For my kids, my wife, my loved ones, and MYSELF. Stop dreaming and start living.
