Unfortunately in this life there are going to be failures. There will be things that you will try that, for whatever reason, simply don’t work out. Your health and personal fitness are certainly not immune to this rule. There will be diets that fail. There will be workout programs that start strong but for whatever reason fizzle out after a week or two. Funny thing about failure, though – you can actually let it excite you more than frustrate you. Failure means that you are trying something different. It means that a change has occurred or that you’re attempting something in a different way. Often times this change or new way of doing things is outside of your comfort zone. One can actually learn to embrace failure, learn from it, and come back stronger and then he/she was before. In this light, failure should actually be welcome; especially in stark contrast to a very different emotion… regret.
Regret usually comes from a completely different set of circumstances. We oftentimes regret the things that we didn’t do. In the world of personal health and fitness, regret comes from the diet we didn’t try, the workout we didn’t do, and the lifestyle changes that were never made. Just as failure comes from trying new adventures unsuccessfully, regret usually comes from doing nothing. Regret usually comes from our comfort zone; success, change, progress, (and even sometimes failure) come from stepping outside of what is comfortable and trying something different.
So do something new this week! Don’t be afraid to fail, rather embrace the challenge of change. I can live with failure. I can learn from it, adapt, and come back stronger than before. Regret, on the other hand – the things I left undone, the workouts I left untried, the diet I never ate… these are the things that terrify me. So dare to make a change. And dare to do it today. No regrets from here on out.
