Are you ready to shred?
Like it or not, winter is definitely upon us! In fact – we woke up the other morning to a small layer of snow on the ground. Upon seeing the fluffy white stuff, my kiddos immediately turned their gazes towards the snow-covered mountains behind our house. Almost in unison, they turned to me and said “Dad – look at all that snow! Can we go skiing?!”
If your stoke level is the same as that of my kiddos, you can’t wait for more of the white stuff to fall! Make sure you’re physically ready for the season by training specific muscles through specific motions used in skiing/snowboarding. This workout is going to get you there! Here we go!
The muscles in your legs, hips, and core are crucial to skiing and snowboarding. Keeping them strong not only ensures your ability to enjoy the entire season injury-free, but can actually improve your performance on the hill.
For this workout, we’ll be focusing on lateral motions, trunk and core rotation, and hip stabilization. It’s going to be a good one! Let’s do it!
The Workout
Box Jump Squats (10 reps)
Great way to condition your legs to become the shock absorbers they need to be on the hill. Try to land as softly as you can and make sure you come fully upright up on top of the box
Speed Skater Lunges (10 reps to each side)
Explosive power and lateral hip strength – a great way to improve leg and knee stability
Squat with Reverse Wood Chop (10 reps to each side)
Combining the power of a squat with torso rotation – crucial for maintaining control on the mountain.
Bicycle Crunches (20 touches to each side)
It’s amazing how much of skiing/snowboarding is controlling torso rotation. Bicycle crunches are an excellent way to strengthen and train the obliques.
Wall Sits (60 seconds)
Because stamina is crucial. Build endurance with a good ol’ wall sit.
Jump Rope (60 seconds)
(If you don’t have a rope available, jumping with an “imaginary rope” is just as effective). One of my favorite exercises for explosive calf muscle strength (I’m looking at you, snowboarders!)
Repeat the circuit three times through to be ready to shred in no time!
