I don’t know about the rest of you, but the treadmill is something I tend to suffer through. Running on this bad boy is usually my warm up before my weight training and unless Sportscenter or an amazing action show is on it’s something that I pretty much count down the seconds to get through. That’s when I realized – “Why am I wasting this time by just going through the motions? Why not actually turn this piece of equipment into part of my workout?” I started doing a little research and came up with the following: A Treadmill HIIT Workout! Mix up the monotony of the treadmill with a little high-intensity interval action and Bingo! You get a killer, 10-minute cardio blast calories and shred unwanted body fat. Check it out below!
The ideal HIIT prescription for maximum efficacy is when you get into a 2:1 work:rest ratio. The “advanced” recommendation below follows this recommendation, however may take some working up to if you’re not familiar with this type of activity. Start with the beginner/intermediate and work your way up to faster speeds and longer times.
Spend 2-3 minutes warming up with a brisk walk or light jog.
Beginner: 20-second sprint; 40-second jog. 10 times total
Intermediate: 30-second sprint; 30-second jog. 10 times total
Advanced: 40-second sprint; 20-second jog. 10 times total
Spend 2-3 minutes cooling down by walking
And just like that, I’m friends with the treadmill again! Try this at the end of a workout – it’s a great way to deplete whatever energy storage you have left and really get up into the “fat burning” zone.
