What would you give to spend 30 minutes with a registered dietician to be able to ask him/her anything you wanted?? What questions would you ask? How would you use this info to improve your eating, your mood, and your overall health? Well today we’re making it all possible! I’ve teamed up with an amazing company, American Health, to bring you an opportunity that could very well change your life… a free video consultation with a registered dietician! Ask whatever questions you want to get specific answers to your personal needs! I actually had this opportunity last week, and it was such a great experience! I wanted to ask her 5 questions that I felt pertained most-closely to you – my readers! Check out the following for a summary of our conversation and see below for how you can get your very own consultation with a dietician!
First, allow me to introduce you to this company. Amwell is the nation’s largest telehealth company. It’s an incredibly easy and convenient way for us as users to connect with board-certified licensed doctors, dieticians, and psychologists anytime, anywhere for a consultation! Seriously – these docs are available 24/7 all from the comfort of your home. It’s exactly like “Facetime-ing” or “Skyping” with your doctor!
I used this opportunity to speak with a registered dietician. She has 10+ years experience across a wide variety of fields with a specialty in sports nutrition. I like to post a lot of information about recipes and nutrition, but in no means am I a registered dietician. It was fascinating to talk with this professional and have her offer me some advice that I could pass along to you. She holds an advanced degree and is registered to practice in 24 states! That’s fascinating!
So again, I asked her some questions that I thought all of you might be interested in hearing about and she gave me some really insightful answers. Here’s what we discussed…
1. T&T: How many calories should I eat?
Amwell RD: “That all depends on your goals!” I gave her some information she needed (in this case I gave her my wife’s statisctics – her height, weight, and activity level) and she was able to precisely figure out how many calories [my wife] should be eating everyday! The “bottom line” advice to this answer was “25-30 calories per kilogram body weight for maintenance; 20-25 calories per kilogram body weight for weight loss.”
2. T&T: Where should the majority of those calories be coming from?
Amwell RD: “Once again – it depends on your goals!” I love how individualized this was. “If your goal is to lose weight then 45% of your calories should come from carbs.” There are 4 calories in 1 g of carbs. “If your goal is maintenance then 50-60% of your calories should be carbs. If you want to put on muscle (my question!) then you need to up your protein intake to 30-40 percent of your daily calories (also 4 calories in 1 g protein).”
3. T&T: What are your thoughts about a “cheat day”?
Amwell RD: “I really don’t love the thought of a ‘cheat day’; cheat meals should be the goal. Keep in mind that in order to lose 1 pound you have to create a 3500 calorie deficit (calories consumed – calories burned = a negative number). Even if you’ve been consistent all week in creating this deficit it’s really easy to blow the whole thing with one day of poor eating.” She recommended “shoot for a cheat meal instead. Eat a good breakfast, good lunch, have healthy snacks, and when it comes time to cheat do it conservatively. Split dessert with someone and try to find something that’s mostly fruit.” All great ideas!
4. T&T: How much sugar is the recommended daily allowance?
Amwell RD: “6 teaspoons for a female and 9 for a male… There are 4 grams of sugar in one teaspoon. For example if you eat something that has 32 grams of sugar then you just ate 8 full teaspoons.” This one was shocking! I couldn’t believe that I should be limiting myself to 36 grams a day! I feel like I’ve done well to cut down to around this mark, but still have some room to improve!
5. T&T: How can I teach my kids to eat health?
Amwell RD: “Parents are the best examples. It’s vital that you are vigilant in what you are doing. If they see you have these healthy habits then they will want to emulate them.” It’s shocking how true this is! We’ve tried to encourage our kids to make healthy choices when it comes to their food options; now when they come home from school we find them asking for granola bars or cheese sticks instead of heading straight to the junk drawer. “Lead by example and encourage them to eat what you’re eating.” I loved that! If you’re doing what you should be doing then they will want to follow suit.
Whatever your goals – if you’re looking to lose weight, gain muscle, eat healthier, or just feel better – this is a half hour conversation that you WILL NOT want to miss! I loved it so much, I had to figure out some way to share it with all of you…
