Lately I have been getting a lot of questions from people asking about personal training: Is it a good idea? How do I find the best one? Why should I do it? The truth is there are many great reasons why working out with a personal trainer is a good idea. Today I have teamed up with the American Council on Exercise (ACE) to share five of my favorite reasons with you and also introduce those of you who maybe interested to the path whereby you can actually become a personal trainer! ACE has created a comprehensive guide outlining all the steps necessary to becoming a personal trainer; we will also talk about that a little bit. Here we go!
While the reasons to work out with a personal trainer are many, for the purposes of this post I have narrowed them down to my top five:
1. Accreditation – In order to earn an accredited personal training certification, trainers must pass a personal training exam which is based off a manual and supporting study materials created by the certification organization. This process involves weeks of studying depending on the individual’s background. Finding a certified personal trainer to work with ensures that your trainer has done his/her work – that they’ve got a great understanding of the body and how it works and what they can do to help you see results. When looking for a personal trainer, it’s important to find one certified by National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). Literally hundreds of companies offer a “personal training certification”, but only those trainers who have passed a NCCA-accredited exam have an accredited training certificate. Something to look out for when shopping around for a trainer!
2. Experience – Whether you’re just starting out in your fitness journey and don’t know where to start or you’re a seasoned veteran whose progress seems to have plateaued, you will benefit from the knowledge and experience of a personal trainer. A good personal trainer knows when to push, when to hold you back, when to recommend a rest day, and evaluate how your body is reacting to the regimen. If you’re looking to take your results to another level, their experience can help you do it!
3. Encouragement – I don’t know about you, but I always workout harder when I have other people watching! Whether I’m getting a spot from a friend or an encouraging “you got this” on my last rep – there’s a strong psychosocial component to exercise. Personal trainers not only recommend exercises and take you through workouts, their job is to offer encouragement and help when needed. This can be a powerful component in helping you to push harder, dig deeper, and not quit early on a set.
4. Scheduling – Let’s face it, life happens. Between kids, work, social life, recreation, etc. sometimes getting in workout time just seems like “one more thing”. Unfortunately all-too often this workout time is one of the first to be pushed to the back burner or rescheduled to another day. Scheduling your workout (i.e. setting up an appointment with a personal trainer) ensures that you will have time set aside to make yourself and your fitness a priority. You will be less apt to miss this appointment or reschedule this time if you have it down on your schedule.
5. Individualized Instruction – One of the most vital, yet often-overlooked, benefits of working out with a trainer is individualized workout instruction, education, and planning. You can focus on one certain body area or condition and have your trainer create entire plans around your personal goals. This results in a highly-customized experience that yields highly-customized results. You will truly see how far you can push your outcomes when the instruction is completely tailored to you.
