so it was spring break! whoopie. I thought I would send the kids outside and get some freaking peace some cleaning done. it snowed. and it was cold and windy. Idaho really stinks sometimes. so I thought I had better think fast and come up with some outside games that could be done inside. hopscotch.
classic. I went to joanns (shoutout!) and bought me some white canvas stuff. (it was 6.99 a yard…but I had my 50% off coupon) I actually went to home depot first to find a drop cloth but the smallest I could find was a 5 ft by 5 ft (for about the same price) so if anyone is a mad 4 square player you could buy that and do it up right.
I was on the fence about whether to hot glue stuff to it or paint….. but I finally went with hot glue…I mean I’ve got to live up to the name right? but for the record…paint would be easy to do (as long as your canvas is thick enough) or you could even sew fabric…but those methods require a bit more work. I bought two yards and cut it in half….but that makes two mats….so you could just buy one yard and sew the ends together to make one long mat (does that make any sense at all? basically..you want one long piece of fabric…by any means necessary)
Then I just hot glued the pieces right onto the canvas (make sure all the edges are glued down nice and tight seeing how there is going to be a lot of jumping on it)
and go to town
and wrapped a rubber band around it

I love love LOVE this idea !!! A definate must around here. My daughter loves hopscotch and hates rainy days when I can’t draw one outside. This is definately going on my to do list. And I love the fact you made other games on the back side too. Awesome Job !!!!!
Marissa @ Crafty Kricket says
Love this idea! While I live in Texas and summer is already here, this will be great during the actual summer when it’s just too stinking hot to go outside. Plus, I can only take so much fighting over the only two sings and 5 kids! Thanks for the awesome idea!

BEAUTIFUL!
I had to laugh when I saw this blog as I am NOT a sewer :( but instead call myself a “hot gluer”. I had seen an indoor hop-scotch a few years ago and never made it for my kids as it required sewing. I kept thinking about it though and knowing that the girls would enjoy it in our hallway. After seeing your blog today we WILL finalllllllly be making one! It’s so colorful and fun looking. Also, I LOVE the other games you made.
I will link my blog back to you after I have made my project. :) Thanks for the inspiration!

Jessica at Me Sew Crazy says
love this idea!!! So cute! I spent HOURS each day outside as a child playing hopscotch…and when I didn’t have chalk, I would use a rock to scratch out the hopscotch boxes. This is AWESOME!!!
Kristina says
That looks great. I WANT ONE!!!!
Lexie Waa says
this Rocks!!! I am totally going to do this even if it’s Spring now, it will have something to do on a rainy day!
It’s looks awesome and a great idea!!!
Amanda says
This is great! Did you notice it sliding at all on the wood floor? I wonder if you could put little strips of some cabinet liner stuff to make it non-stick. Carpet wouldn’t be a big deal, but I could imagine it being pretty slippy on a smooth floor. I love the colors and creativity!!
Kristina says
This is such a cute idea! I want to make one for my children’s ministry!

I’m thinking that would make a great gift idea! Thanks

my kids would flip over this! I wanted to make one a week or so ago and got lazy, I just taped paper numbers to the carpet, they had a blast, but I’m sure this colorful version would be a HUGE hit! Super cute, thanks for such a fun idea!
Alicia says
Once again, Kim – BRILLIANT!!!!! Totally bookmarking this one! =)
Megan says
p.s. Love all the hot glue, I am not a seamstress! My little girls Halloween costume was mostly felt, once I realized I could hot glue instead of sew, I was in HEAVEN!
Renee says
Cute idea, you are so creative. Did you use exactly 1 yard of canvas fabric?
kimbowest says
yes…if you only buy one yard you will have to cut it in half to make it long…it’s about 60 inches wide and two yards long
Kassi @ Truly Lovely says
I LOVE THIS!!! It so reminds me of my Granny teaching me to draw a hop scotch in chalk on the sidewalk, then to play. Fun fun! Great guest post!

I second Amanda’s question. I think this looks super cute and a great activity for kids but it also sort of looks like a broken leg waiting to happen. Doesn’t it slide around?

Such a fantastic idea! I love the polka dots around the edge. And then adding more games to the back too?! – Wow!

This is just brilliant! I’ve been planning out a hopscotch mat in my head for a couple of weeks now, but you’ve come up with something way better than what I’ve managed so far. Moving this to the top of the to-do list! I love that it’s double-sided…you’re a genius! :)

I LOVE this! … I am just beginning into the crafty world… seriously, this is going to sound LAME – but what exactly is canvas fabric?
Deebi27 says
I love, love, love this idea…front side and back. I have been wanting to paint 2 hopscotch games on a concrete area on our preschool playground. They bought aN indoor/outdoor carpet/rug hopscotch instead. I am thinking about grabbing some canvas and paint an indoor mat with some other games on the reverse side. I am worried the felt might get well worn in my classroom too quickly. Paint and seal it with polyurethane. THANKS FOR SUCH A FABULOUS IDEA! I know my class will love to play the game inside on our carpet area!
Nancy says
My grandkids would love this! What a great idea for a rainy (or not) day. Thanks
Linda says
An alternative to a hot glue gun, that may seal edges even better, is heat and bond, or stitch witchery. I once made an entire soccer banner, with NO sewing!
April says
So cute!!! What were ye actual dimensions of yours?

What a clever and creative idea for your kids !!!
