Fitness Motivation – Every morning in Africa a gazelle wakes up…

I first heard this quote while reading the book “Born to Run” by Christopher McDougall. As I researched the origins of the quote a little more it’s controversial as to who originally said it, but I LOVE the message it conveys. I think that somewhere deep inside our bodies crave physical activity. Call it innate, primal, or just plain crazy, but your body wants to be active and the needs to be moving. And it applies to so much more than running…

Now granted, I’m not a big “runner”. I’ve done my fair share of 5K’s and enjoy getting out on a Saturday morning run before the kiddos wake up, but I’m admittedly more of a weight-head myself. That certainly doesn’t mean that I don’t love the message this quote conveys. To me it says so much more than “you better be running”. I interpret it as “it’s the start of a new day. You have a whole 24 hours of choices in front of you and they start right now. How will you choose to spend your time?” Health, fitness, exercise, and wellness are certainly choices. WHY NOT CHOOSE THEM? When the sun comes up and you’re presented with a day’s worth of opportunities choose to make yourself- your mind – your body – your soul – a priority. I promise you will feel healthier, happier, and ready to outrun any lion or chase down any gazelle that may come your way.

Video Workout: Low Impact Total Body Cardio Workout

As a physical therapist, I have a lot of patients who have bad feet or weak joints and so sometimes high intensity workouts are just too much for them.
However, just because a workout is low impact doesn’t mean it’s easy!
Try this workout- I guarantee you will be a sweaty mess by the end.

Ready for week 3?! Hope you’ve been enjoying our Butt and Gut series and have been starting to feel a difference with these exercises. Here’s your next installment of our exercises for this upcoming week. Get these in 4 times this week and come ready to finish up strong next week!

Butt and Gut Week One
Butt and Gut Week Two
Butt and Gut Week Four

Butt
15 Jump Squats
15 Back Lunges (step backward 15x each leg)
10 Single-Leg Dead Lifts (each leg)
10 Side Planks with Hip Lift (each side)
15 Swiss Ball Hamstring Curls OR Single-Leg Bridges (if no ball available)
Repeat three times

Gut
 10 Butt-Ups (Hip Raises)
20 Scissor Kicks
20 Bicycle Crunches (10 each side)
15 Butterfly Crunches
Repeat three times

Whole routine 4 times this week!!

Fitness Motivation – If you’re tired of starting over then stop giving up!

We’ve all been there before… starting a new diet and workout program. We’re completely amped for the first week, pretty excited the second week, miss a day or two the third week, and by about 4 weeks into it we’ve completely lost all steam. In fitness as with most things in life, the hardest part of the journey is taking the first step. If you find that first step difficult (as most of us do) then I offer you a simple solution in today’s motivation post…

STOP GIVING UP!

Start once! Keep your eye on the goal! Start with the end in sight and stick with it until you see it through! If you have started a given fitness program (maybe our 4-week Butt and Gut series, for example) and find yourself slowly slipping then now is the time to do something about it. Remember why you started. Remember the goals that you had and the self-image you desire. Then have the drive, courage, and determination to see it through! Don’t ever start again by not ever quitting what you have now! You can do it… I know you can…
